TOURIST INFORMATION AGUASCALIENTES VERSION ESPAÑOL

Federal Entity of the Mexican Republic with an area of 5589 square kilometers, accounting for 0.3 percent of the country's area.

Adjacent to the north, east and west by the state of Zacatecas, on the south and east by the Jalisco. The political division consists of eleven municipalities: Aguascalientes, Seats, Calvillo, Cosío, Jesus Maria, Arteaga Pavilion, corner Romos, San Jose de Gracia, Tepezalá, San Francisco and Romo of El Llano.

The main elevations that are in the entity are: Sierra Fria (3050 m), Sierra del Laurel (2760 meters), Cerro del Mirador (2700 meters), The Skull Hill (2660 m), Sierra Seat (2650 meters) , San Juan Hill (2530 meters), John Hill Grande (2500 meters), the Picacho Hill (2420 meters) and the hill Gallos (2340 meters).

An emigration of Spaniards seated in the zone of Aguascalientes faced in its beginnings an inhospitable atmosphere given the geography of the place: semidry and barren climate in valleys, with trees of huizache and mezquite; nopales, teasel, sotol, duraznillo and palm.

And while wolves, coyotes, foxes, hares, quails and owls occupied those lands, in the mountains of Sierra Fría or Sierra del Laurel, deers, pumas

and wild boars rounded among pines, holm oakes and cedars. Also, the proximity of those colonizers with chichimeca communities caused many years of sacking and confrontation, suffering assaults and robbery of harvests or cattle due to the indigenous hostility towards those Europeans.

The foundation of Aguascalientes obeyed to a necessity of the viceroyalty of New Galicia, so much that colinizers, harvests and cattle were safe from the hostilities of chichimecas or guachichiles. In addition the New Spain had the high-priority to maintain in order a route that communicated with the cities of Guadalajara or Zacatecas... and with the mines.

Aguascalientes was founded the 22 of October of 1575 like Villa of the Ascención, where a called fort Aguascalientes was located, by the captain Juan De Montoro Rodriguez and other people that came from Santa Maria de los Lagos, one of the first localities established in the zone.

And today Aguascalientes greatly celebrates its 430th anniversary!
The development of Aguascalientes always was joined with the wealth of Zacatecas, being initially a refuelling stop in the long journeys from Zacatecas to Mexico City or Guadalajara.

Towards the second decade of the XVII century, far from being a crossing site, the city even became food supplier of Zacatecas, being that many great proprietaries and retailers were miners in that city before settling down in Aguascalientes.

In the last years the city of Aguascalientes has become an important educative center and of scientific research, emphasizing in some areas at level of Latin America.

For example the National Institute of Statistical Geography and Computing Information (INEGI), the University of Aguascalientes or the Technological University.

Of equal way, in this city a surprising cultural diversity exists that is worth the trouble well to know: pictorial works of Saturnino Hernán in the Museum of Aguascalientes; the Museum of Modern Art with works of Jose Luis Cuevas, Juan Soriano or Vicente Rojo; the Guadalupe Posada Museum combining the work of the greatest Mexican carver.

The Aguascalientes Theater offering a great calendar of events whole the year, having the best spectacles of music, theater and dance: Claude Bolling, Paco de Lucía, Buenavista Social Club, Joan Manuel Serrat, the Symphony Orchestra of Russia, the Singing Children of Vienna and many, many more.

An overflowing city of culture, variety and good pleasure! The children learn and play in the Descubre Museum, one of the best museums of science and technology of the country, with wonderful interactive exhibitions and a Imax screen.

Aguascalientes is the house of the Fair of San Marcos, the oldest and famous fair of the country, realized from April 10 to 5th of May. In this event of international stature the popular street parties follow one another, fights of roosters in the greatest palenque of Latin America, as well as an elegant casino, unique in Mexico.

Bullfigthers of reputation gamble the life in the bullring, provoking intense emotions to the brave celebration lovers in a beautiful plaza surrounded by arcades with porches and theater boxes of quarry; the traditional contest of typical suits, agricultural, cattle and industrial exhibitions, the National Poetry Prize and an ample program of the Cervantino festival... and so many attractions without equal!

To take a walk by Aguascalientes offers the opportunity to discover the architecture of Refugio Reyes, the sobriety of the Morelos Theater, the generosity of the main square and the Government Palace, as well as the renewed image of the Arquitos.

In the environs of the Cathedral Basilica, the Temple of Guadalupe or the Temple of San Marcos, the close traditional districts of La Estación, the Encino, San Marcos and Guadalupe, same that conserve invaluable treasures of colonial architecture which narrate a part of the enigmatic history of Aguascalientes.

In the Three Centuries Square the Museum of the Railroad, the Monument to the Locomotive and the Wagon Theater; the streetcar riding over traditional districts and traditional points... and the gastronomy! Nothing like enjoying a roast pig, an aguascalentense Chile or the farmer soup, between so many recipes with ingredients and flavors that delight the taste, accompanying the food with an exquisite wine of the region.

Because, did you know that Aguascalientes was the second Mexican territory where the grapavine was planted? In the fifties the wine industry reached its best, producing table wines, brandy and other liqueurs that are the pride of the city.

It is Aguascalientes! City where the hospitality of its inhabitants interlaces with the row and tradition of its celebrations, with its history, its cultural treasures and virtues that make it a warm and unforgettable city.
